What a Hue visa run actually is

A visa run from Hue is simple in theory: you leave Vietnam, cross into Laos at the Lao Bao border, and come straight back so your period of stay restarts with a fresh stamp. In practice, the border has its own rhythm, and first-timers waste hours guessing which window to stand in and what to hand over.

This guide walks through the whole run the way our drivers actually do it. You will see the route from Hue City to the Lao Bao–Dansavanh crossing, the exact timeline for a same-day trip, what a private car costs versus the add-ons, and a packing list that covers the paperwork people forget.

Who ends up booking this run? Digital nomads on their second or third month in Vietnam, expats teaching in Hue, retirees on visa-exemption stamps, and tourists who overstayed by a day or two and need to fix it fast. If your visa or exemption stamp is within a week of expiring, this is the standard fix. Vietnam does not let you extend most tourist e-visas from inside the country, so exiting and re-entering is the legal way to reset the clock.

The whole trip takes about 12 hours door to door. Drivers collect you between 04:00 and 05:30, clear immigration at Lao Bao between 08:30 and 11:00, stop for lunch in Dong Ha, and drop you back in Hue City or at Phu Bai Airport by late afternoon. Cars run every day of the year, including weekends and holidays, which matters when your stamp expires on a Sunday.

Two things make a Hue run different from flying to Bangkok or Siem Reap for the same purpose. First, it is a genuine same-day round trip, so you lose one day instead of three. The route: Hue to Lao Bao and back

The border crossing used by Hue visa runs is Lao Bao on the Vietnamese side and Dansavanh on the Laos side, in Quang Tri province. It sits roughly 80 kilometers northwest of Hue City as the road runs, and it is the closest land border to Hue that is practical for a same-day round trip.

The drive goes like this. Your driver collects you in Hue City, then heads north on QL1A, the coastal highway. The car picks up extra riders in Phu Bai and, depending on the day, Lang Co. From there the route follows QL1A north past Dong Ha, then turns west on QL9 toward the border. QL9 is the old wartime highway through the DMZ area, and it is the last stretch before Laos. Total drive time to the border is usually around three and a half to four hours each way, which is why the day starts before sunrise.

Why Lao Bao and not another crossing? It is the only border near central Vietnam where the whole process, exit stamp on the Vietnam side, entry into Laos, and the return crossing, can be done in a few hours with cars running daily. Crossings further north in Nghe An or further south near Kon Tum add hours of driving for no benefit. The border itself is a two-sided operation. On the Vietnamese side you queue for the exit stamp at the Lao Bao international checkpoint. Once stamped out, you walk across to Dansavanh on the Laos side, where the fixer team handles the Laos visa-on-arrival paperwork. Most nationalities can enter Laos visa-free or with a paid visa on arrival, and the fixers carry the forms so you do not have to fill anything out in a hurry.

After the Laos entry stamp, the return is quick. You walk back through the Laos exit window, then re-enter Vietnam at the same checkpoint you left. That re-entry stamp is the whole point of the trip: it gives you a fresh period of stay. Most riders are back in the car by late morning, with a lunch stop in Dong Ha on the way home.

The day of the run, step by step

Here is how a typical Hue to Lao Bao visa run unfolds, based on hundreds of runs our drivers have done from central Hue, An Cuu, and the Citadel lanes.

A few timing notes. Cars run 365 days a year, so a weekend or holiday expiry is not a problem. But Vietnam immigration only processes e-visas Monday to Friday, so if you need a rush e-visa tier for the same day, the run itself has to happen on a weekday. Also, the border is busiest right after Vietnamese public holidays, when everyone returns at once; booking a couple of days before your stamp expires gives you room to absorb delays.

What a Hue visa run costs

The transport is a flat per-car rate, not per person. A private car from Hue City, An Cuu, or the Perfume River area to Lao Bao and back costs 2,800,000 VND, roughly 113 USD at current rates, for the whole car. That covers a bilingual driver, DMZ tolls, the Quang Tri fixer team at the border, and the return drop-off anywhere inside Hue city limits.

The car fits up to four travelers, so the per-person cost drops fast if you split it. Two people pay about 56 USD each. Four people pay about 28 USD each. The same flat rate applies from Lang Co, Lap An, and Phu Loc, including resorts around Laguna and the Bach Ma foothills, with the option to end in Hue City on the return leg.
