A stamp deadline in the middle of the monsoon
Hue's wet season runs from about September through December, and the two heaviest months are October and November. That is also when a lot of visas expire. Travelers who arrived in Hue in July or August on a 90-day e-visa are looking at a stamp date somewhere in October, and backpackers on the 45-day exemption hit the same wall.
So the question our desk gets asked most in autumn is not whether the run works. It is what happens if it rains.
The short version
- The Lao Bao gate is open 365 days a year and does not close for rain.
- The route from Hue is sealed highway the whole way: QL1A north to Dong Ha, then QL9 west through Cam Lo and Khe Sanh to the border.
- Ordinary rain changes nothing. Heavy rain in the mountains is a different story. The stretch at risk is the last leg of QL9 west of Khe Sanh and the approach into Lao Bao town, where the Se Pon River rises fast.
- When that stretch does go under, it usually reopens within hours to a couple of days, because QL9 is the East-West Economic Corridor and the border is an international crossing.
- The way to make this a non-problem is timing. Run two or three days before your stamp expires, not on the day, and book a car that can wait out a downpour instead of a bus that runs to a timetable.
Hue rainfall by month, September to December
Hue is one of the wettest cities in Vietnam, and the rain is concentrated into the last third of the year. Different datasets give different absolute numbers, so the table below shows the range from three long-term climate sets. The pattern is the same in all of them.

For perspective, the dry end of Hue's year is February at roughly 90 to 106 mm. October and November each deliver four to five times that.
Two details matter more than the millimetres. First, most of this falls in bursts. A front arrives, dumps 100 mm or more in a night, and moves on. It is rarely a solid week of rain from dawn to dusk. Second, the rain is heaviest in the mountains west of Hue, which is exactly where QL9 runs. Lao Bao recorded 178 mm in a single night in August 2026 while Hue City saw less.
The stretch that actually breaks
Ninety percent of the Hue to Lao Bao route shrugs off rain. QL1A north to Dong Ha is a wide flat highway, and QL9 from Dong Ha to Cam Lo runs through farmland. Water pools on the shoulder and traffic keeps moving.
The last leg is different. West of Khe Sanh, QL9 climbs into the Truong Son foothills for roughly 20 to 25 kilometres to Lao Bao. There is a cut slope on one side and a drop on the other, and the road crosses culverts and low spillways that back up when the hills drain fast. This is where the damage shows up, year after year.
Then there is Lao Bao town itself. The Se Pon River runs between the town and the border gate, and it rises quickly. When it does, the approach road and the low bridge at Ha Let village are the first things to go under.
What that looked like in the August 2026 front, which was a moderate one:
- Lao Bao recorded 178 mm of rain overnight, with 186 mm at Huong Loc and 175 mm at Tan Long.
- The Se Pon River rose about 1.5 metres, flooding lanes in Lao Bao.
- The culvert near Border Guard Post 38 slipped around two metres and had to be closed.
- Thirteen flooded points blocked traffic across Tan Lap, Lia, Khe Sanh, A Doi and Huong Phung communes.
- An old bridge at Ba Nang, already under repair, was washed out.
Nobody abandoned a visa run over that front. But drivers coming through that week were working around closures rather than driving straight through.
September 2026: the event that set the tone for the season
The heaviest rain of the 2026 season so far came early, from 12 to 14 September. It fell across Hue City and Quang Tri province at once, and it is worth knowing what it did, because this is the shape of the worst case for a visa run.
At the peak, on 13 September, authorities in Quang Tri counted flooding at three points on national highways, nine points on provincial roads, and 41 inter-commune roads under water. Provincial Road 588a, between the Ba Long spillway and Km11+240, was submerged by more than five metres. On National Highway 15D near La Lay, an embankment landslide blocked the road completely. A slide on the Ho Chi Minh Road at Ta Rut commune dropped around 200 cubic metres of rock and soil onto the surface.
In Lao Bao commune, the Se Pon River pushed into the town. VnExpress reported 145 households, roughly 470 people, moved to safety. The commune chairman told Saigon Giai Phong that close to 400 homes had taken on between one and three metres of water. Slides were also logged in Dakrong and Truong Son communes and on an inter-commune road at Tram village in Khe Sanh.
By the morning of 14 September the river levels were falling and cleanup crews were already out. Quang Tri's provincial military command put 1,480 personnel on road clearing and recovery.
Two things to take from this. The Quang Tri mountain network floods badly and it floods fast. And the response is heavy and quick, because these are the province's main roads.
What happens on a run day when the road is shut
There is one road to that gate. QL9 is the only vehicle route from central Vietnam to Lao Bao, so there is no clever detour when the western leg goes under. The honest options are wait, or run on another day.
This is how the timing works on our cars.
The dispatcher rechecks conditions before 04:00, when the cars are due to roll. That check is a mix of weather radar, road-status notices from Quang Tri, and the drivers who ran the route the day before. If the mountain leg is closed or the Se Pon bridge is under water, you find out at the hotel, not at Khe Sanh.
If the rain lands mid-route, the driver stops and waits. Forty minutes of heavy rain on this road is worth sitting out, and a car can sit at a cafe in Khe Sanh or Dong Ha for as long as it takes. That is the real difference between a car and a bus in October.
Worth knowing: if the flooding is at Lao Bao town itself, the gate can be open while the approach is not. Border hours do not change for rain, and the gate keeps working on the Laos side, but you cannot reach the window if the bridge at Ha Let is under a metre of river. Buffer days, and why autumn is not the month to run on the last day
Overstay fines in Vietnam start at 500,000 VND for the first day and climb by bracket from there, with the serious deportation territory beginning around day 16. So a flooded road is not just an inconvenience, it is a bill.
The rule we give in October and November: run two to three days before your stamp expires, not on the final day. If a front parks over Quang Tri for 36 hours, a two-day buffer absorbs it. A same-day gamble does not.
There is a second reason to go early. An e-visa is dated, and you can leave Vietnam before it runs out without losing anything. Leaving two days early costs you two days at the end, which for a 90-day visa is a rounding error. Missing the date costs money and, on repeat cases, an entry refusal you have to explain.
If your only legal day really is the last day, do this instead: take the 04:00 car rather than the 05:30 one, watch the forecast from two days out, and keep the Laos visa fee in clean USD notes ready so nothing at the border slows you down. Car or bus when the forecast is bad
The bus guide on this site explains the cheap route in detail. In the dry season it is a fine way to do the run. Between September and December, the comparison tilts hard toward the car, and it is not about comfort.

The bus leg that hurts is the transfer at Dong Ha. That is where you leave a Hue coach and pick up the westward service, and it is exactly the point where a flooded QL9 strand leaves you with a decision and no transport. Motorbike and xe om trips to the border should be off the table this season. The mountain leg has slick surfaces, blind bends, and rockfall after heavy rain, and the ride is four hours each way in weather gear. Save that idea for March.
If the water arrives while you are already at the border
The awkward case is a run that starts in clear weather and ends in a flood. It happens: you cross into Laos in the morning, and by early afternoon the Se Pon is over the road into Lao Bao town.
What the border does in that situation:
- The Lao side at Dansavanh and the Vietnam side at Lao Bao both keep operating. Neither closes for rain.
- Your Vietnam re-entry depends on an approved e-visa or a valid exemption, and both work in the wet. Immigration does not care about the weather.
- You still need two Lao Digital Immigration Form submissions for a same-day turnaround, one on entry and one on exit, each with its own QR code inside a three-day window.
- If the town approach is impassable, the fix is a bed in Lao Bao rather than a push. Guesthouses there run 200,000 to 500,000 VND a night, and the crossing is a five-minute walk from the door in the morning.
One thing to watch in the chaos: keep the passport in your own hands. A fixer or driver offering to hold documents while you shelter is well meaning, and it is still a bad idea at any border on any day.

Packing for a wet-season run
The car is dry, the border counters are covered, and the walk between the two posts is a few hundred metres outdoors. So you do not need expedition kit. You need one thing kept bone dry and a couple of small comforts.
- Passport inside a ziplock bag, inside a rigid plastic folder. A wet passport at a land border is a genuine problem, and it is the single most avoidable mistake of the season.
- Two passport photos for the Laos visa on arrival, in a plastic sleeve rather than loose in a pocket. They cost 50,000 VND a pair in Hue.
- The 40 USD Laos visa fee in clean, undamaged notes, in a dry pouch. Torn or damp notes get refused.
- A light rain shell. November afternoons sit around 22 to 26 degrees, so insulation is not the issue, wind-driven rain is.
- Footwear that drains. Leather shoes will still be wet when you get home.
- One spare pair of socks. This is the difference between a decent day and a miserable one.
- A towel and a dry bag for anything electronic.
What you can leave at the hotel: the laptop, the drone, and the beach gear. Nothing at Lao Bao needs them, and the less you carry through two immigration counters, the faster the turnaround.

Is it safe to do a visa run from Hue in the rainy season?
Usually yes. The whole route is sealed highway and the cars run in the rain every year. The risk sits on the last stretch west of Khe Sanh and in Lao Bao town, where the Se Pon River can flood the approach road. Dispatch checks road and gate conditions before 04:00 and will move, delay, or cancel a run if the western leg is shut.
Which months are worst for a Hue visa run?
October and November. Hue receives roughly 300 to 500 mm in October and 340 to 480 mm in November depending on the dataset, across 17 to 19 rain days each. September builds toward that peak and December eases off, though December still delivers long grey drizzle.
What happens if the QL9 mountain leg is blocked?
Crews clear it fast because QL9 is the East-West Economic Corridor and Lao Bao is an international crossing. In the September 2026 event, road repair teams were reopening sections by 14 September. If the leg is still shut when your car is due to leave, the options are waiting for the next morning or moving the run to an earlier legal gate day.
Is the bus a better choice than a car in heavy rain?
The bus is the weaker option in heavy rain. Departures are fixed, you change vehicles at Dong Ha, and nothing can be rerouted when a culvert goes under. A private car can wait out a 40-minute downpour, take the drier line, and turn around.
How many buffer days should I leave before my visa expires?

Does the rain ever close the Lao Bao border gate itself?
No. The gate operates every day of the year on roughly 07:00 to 19:00 Vietnam time, and both sides keep the same clock. What close in bad weather are the roads into it, and what close on holidays are the immigration offices behind it. Those are different things, and only the roads matter on a run day.
My visa expires in the middle of the wettest weeks. What is the play?
Go earlier. You can leave Vietnam before the visa runs out with no penalty, so pick a clear window in late September or early October and run then. Two fronts in a row can take out four days of travel, which is exactly the sort of margin a last-day booking does not have.
Should I just wait until the season ends?
Waiting until January means waiting three months, and the December rain at 350 to 380 mm is not much lighter than November. A run does not need a dry day. It needs an open road, and the road is open most days, even in October.
