From there, local buses and minibuses head west on QL9 through the old DMZ area toward Khe Sanh and the Lao Bao border crossing. The checkpoint itself is at the end of the road, roughly 80 kilometers and another hour and a half to two hours west of Dong Ha.
When buses are thin, xe om drivers at the Dong Ha station fill the gap. A motorbike taxi the whole way to Lao Bao runs 200,000 to 300,000 VND and takes about the same time, with the wind in your face the whole way. Do not take the first driver who quotes you a price; the going rate is well known and haggling is normal.
Departure times and the day math
Local buses from Hue to Dong Ha start leaving An Hoa station around 05:00 in the morning and keep coming roughly every hour into the early afternoon. There is no fixed timetable posted in English, and the schedule flexes on holidays, so the practical move is to arrive at the station by 05:30 and take the first bus that fills. Waiting for a "nicer" departure usually just costs you an hour.
From Dong Ha, the westbound buses toward Lao Bao are less frequent, maybe every hour or two, and they thin out noticeably after midday. This is where most DIY runs go wrong: the schedule assumes you will connect, but the connection does not wait for you.
