Why the run goes to Lao Bao

Hue sits closer to Laos than to any other international crossing, and that is the whole reason the visa run exists here. Drive north out of the city for two hours, turn west into the mountains, and you are at the Lao Bao border gate. The Laos checkpoint, Dansavanh, sits a short walk beyond it. Stamp out of Vietnam, step into Laos, stamp straight back, and your stay resets.

The route, leg by leg

The run splits into two very different drives. The first is flat and fast, the second climbs into the hills, and the border waits at the end of it.

Leg 1: Hue to Dong Ha on QL1A. From Hue City you head north on National Road 1A, the same highway that runs the length of Vietnam. The road passes rice fields, the Phong Dien area, and Quang Tri town before you reach Dong Ha, the capital of Quang Tri province. That is roughly 60 kilometers, and it takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and how many coffee stops the driver makes.

Leg 2: Dong Ha to Lao Bao on QL9. At Dong Ha you turn west onto National Road 9, the old Route 9 of the DMZ era. The road runs past Cam Lo, then climbs through the hills toward Khe Sanh, site of the famous 1968 battle, and keeps climbing to the border. This leg is about 85 kilometers and takes close to 2 hours. The scenery turns from farmland to forest, and the last stretch into Lao Bao is all switchbacks and long views down the valley.

Most drivers stop for coffee somewhere around Khe Sanh, partly because the road gets twisty after it and partly because there is a stretch with no services until the border. If you are on the shared car, tell the driver you want the stop. If you are driving yourself, fill up in Dong Ha: fuel gets thin on QL9 and the border town has only basic stations.

What the border actually looks like

Lao Bao is a small border town in Quang Tri, and the crossing is compact. On the Vietnam side, a checkpoint building handles the exit stamp. A few hundred meters of road and a bridge over the Se Pon river separate it from the Laos checkpoint at Dansavanh, in Savannakhet province. Between the two buildings there is nothing to do, no shops worth stopping at, just the road and the river.

For a visa run you do not go anywhere near the town of Dansavanh or deeper into Laos. The routine is to clear Vietnam, walk across, clear Laos, and walk straight back. The whole border segment, both directions, usually takes 45 to 90 minutes. With a Laos visa on arrival it runs longer, because you wait for the Laos immigration officers to process and stamp the visa.

The gate hours are roughly 07:00 to 18:00, so a same-day loop works easily if you leave Hue by 06:00. On public holidays expect shorter staffing and slower queues on both sides, and on Vietnamese Tet the crossing can close entirely for a day or two. If your stamp is tight, do not leave the timing to chance.

Vietnam exit stamp at Lao Bao

Hand over your passport at the immigration window. The officer checks your visa or e-visa and stamps you out. This is quick, usually a few minutes, unless a busload of travelers arrives at the same time.

Walk across to Dansavanh

A few hundred meters of road and the bridge over the Se Pon. Keep your passport in hand, not buried in a bag. The border area has officials and fixers who will wave you toward the right windows.

Laos entry stamp, plus visa on arrival if needed

Most nationalities need a Laos visa on arrival at Dansavanh, around 30 to 40 USD, paid in USD. You fill a short form, hand over two passport photos, pay, and wait for the visa and entry stamp. Allow 20 to 40 minutes here.

Laos exit stamp, same window

Turn around and use the Laos exit counter right there. In and out in the same visit. Nothing else on the Laos side is needed for a visa run.

Back into Vietnam

Walk back over the bridge to the Vietnam checkpoint. The officer stamps you in on your e-visa or existing visa. If you came with a fixer, this is the moment they double-check your new expiry date before the drive home.

What to bring

The list is short, and forgetting one item can cost you the run.

Passport. Obvious, but check it has blank pages and that your Vietnam e-visa or visa is still valid for re-entry.
Printed e-visa. Print a copy and keep the PDF on your phone. Vietnam immigration accepts either, but the printout makes the window faster.
Two passport photos. Needed for the Laos visa on arrival. Bring spares if you have them; the photo booth at the border charges a premium.
USD cash. The Laos visa fee is easiest paid in clean US dollars. Kip works too but the exchange rate at the border window favors the seller.
VND cash. For coffee, lunch on the road, and the odd toilet stop. Cards are useless on QL9.
Water and a snack. The border area has basic stalls, but the drive home is 4 hours and you will want both.
Sunscreen and a hat. The walk between checkpoints is short but fully exposed, and the midday sun in Quang Tri is serious.

Leave the laptop and big electronics at home or in the car. You will not need them, and they slow you down at the scanning windows.

Private car or DIY?

You can do this route yourself. Public buses run from Hue's An Hoa station to Dong Ha, then west on QL9 to Lao Bao, and the total transport cost lands around 300,000 to 500,000 VND round trip. The catch is time: the bus version takes 11 to 12 hours, needs two connections each way, and if you miss the last bus back from Dong Ha, you sleep in Dong Ha.

The private car costs 2,800,000 VND per car, or about 700,000 VND per person when four riders split it. That buys a hotel pickup in Hue, a driver who knows the border, a fixer who walks the paperwork with you, and a guaranteed seat on the way home. For a first run, or a tight stamp, it is the difference between a calm day and a stressful one.
